Christians: Do you have to take the Bible literally to be a true believer?

The Bible is what it is; great wisdom embedded in an imperfect historical record which also contains a lot of false starts inapplicable to our lives. Following Jesus, on the other hand, is to be forgiving, faithful, and loving; none of which is dependent on literal belief in the Bible.
