The mind-body problem?

Can someone please explain to me, as scientifically as possible, how exactly the consciousness can be the product of purely unconscious elements? I think the concepts of strange loops (a phrase coined by Douglass Hofstadter is somewhat related to this. In other words, how does the mind exist in a purely physical reality?
