How do I go about punishing this puppies?

Well my dad who is a vet would hit our dog but only to train her not to do it and if we left the chairs to the tables out my dog would jump on the table and eat whatever we left on the table and its really hard to punish your dog if you dont catch them in the act because they will forget about it so next time they jump on the table and you see them just tell them no and hit them you dont even have to do it hard.
